Riya, the elder among three girls in her family lives in Edathua, a flood-prone region in the Alleppey district of Kerala. Her father is a daily wage labourer and the family resides in a rented one room home. Her father who is the sole breadwinner of the family, barely earns enough to feed a family of five. But Riya and her sisters who are academically bright students have learnt not to complain about their have-nots. The family does not have access to clean drinking water. Riya’s father collects water from a public tap which is situated quite far away from their residence.

Riya fared well in her Class 9 examinations scoring 89.4 percent. An avid reader who loves writing stories and poems and sings in the school choir, Riya’s greatest inspiration in life is Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam. She is studying in Class 10 and dreams of becoming an Astrophysicist like Dr. Kalam. Her parents are unable to provide her guidance and support as they are not educated and cannot afford to send her for training sessions or coaching classes to help her pursue her dream.
